Newborn calf serum is the most widely used natural medium in cell culture. It is rich in nutrients essential for cell growth and performs critically important functions. Serum contains amino acids, vitamins, minerals, lipids and other nutrients required for cell growth, as well as hormones, growth factors and binding proteins that promote cell growth, such as insulin, hydrocortisone, dexamethasone, bFGF, EGF, PDGF and transferrin. In addition, serum also detoxifies, buffers and inhibits protease activity, protecting cells from damage.
Newborn calf serum is collected from healthy newborn calves within 14 hours of birth that have not been fed or given water, from non-epidemic areas. Blood is collected aseptically via the carotid artery and by cardiac or venous puncture, pooled in large batches, and filtered and aliquoted through a 3-stage 0.1 μm filter. The product is sterile, mycoplasma-free and free of specific antibodies, with an FMD antibody titre of ≤ 1:8. Typical supplementation ratio: 5-20%.
